If You Are Using Insurance

If Nova is in-network with your insurance plan, your cost is determined by your insurance plan and our contracted agreement with that insurer. You will not simply be charged the out-of-pocket rates listed above. We will submit claims to your insurance and apply the insurer's contracted/allowed amount and your plan's applicable cost-sharing requirements.  If for example we bill your insurance $225 for an intake appointment but our contractual agreement is that we will accept $125 for the appointment, the remainder will be discounted or written off.  You will never be responsible for the disallowed amount, that is a practice called balance billing, and we do not engage in balance billing.  If we have agreed to accept $125 from your insurance that sum is calculated by adding your deductible, co-pay, or co-insurance amount and the amount the insurance pays us.

Your responsibility may include a deductible, copayment, coinsurance, or other amount determined by your insurance plan.

Insurance Can Be Confusing

Understanding your mental health benefits isn't always straightforward. Terms such as deductible, copay, coinsurance, and allowed amount can make it difficult to know what you will actually owe.

We are happy to help you understand how we bill your insurance, but your insurance company determines your benefits and financial responsibility. We recommend contacting your insurer before beginning care to confirm your mental health benefits, including:

  • Whether Nova is in-network with your specific plan

  • Whether your deductible applies to outpatient mental health services

  • Your copay or coinsurance

  • Your remaining deductible

  • Your plan's allowed amount

  • Any limitations or authorization requirements

  • Whether your benefits differ for telehealth services

Your insurer can provide the most accurate estimate of your individual responsibility.

Not sure what to ask your insurance company? We can provide guidance on the information to request so you can better understand your benefits before starting care.

Understanding Your Insurance

  • Deductible — What you may need to pay before your insurance begins sharing costs.

  • Copayment — A fixed amount you may pay for a covered service.

  • Coinsurance — A percentage of the allowed amount you may be responsible for after your deductible requirements are met.

  • Allowed amount — The amount your insurance plan recognizes for a covered service. This may be different from Nova's standard out-of-pocket rate.
